My name is Morleyan. In 2003, I completed my master's and began my career as a software engineer at Infosys. Little did I know that life had other plans for me. In 2008, I made the decision to take a sabbatical from work to take care of my newborn son. I just could not leave him in the hands of caretakers, so I resigned from my job, putting my career on hold.
In 2011, I conceived again and became a hands-on mother of two toddlers. Determined to pursue some kind of work, this time, I ventured into entrepreneurship and successfully ran an online business for two years. However, life took another turn as my husband's work took us abroad for a couple of years, compelling me to leave behind what I had built.
Upon returning to India, I contemplated re-entering the corporate world. Despite frantic job applications, I didn't receive a single interview call. My career break was a blot on my resume, and I began to lose hope of finding a job.
Undeterred, I pursued another entrepreneurial endeavour by starting a cloud kitchen. Unfortunately, when the pandemic arrived, sustaining the business became incredibly challenging.
During this period, I came across a community that helped and motivated women on career breaks. There, I stumbled upon a testimonial from a fellow member who had successfully completed the CyberShikshaa course and re-started her professional journey after a seven-year hiatus.
Her story motivated me greatly. Inspired, I reached out to her; gathered more information and took the leap by applying for CyberShikshaa. Fortunately, I was selected.
The online classroom sessions brought discipline and structure to my upskilling journey. I set goals and worked hard to achieve them. This experience not only boosted my confidence but also equipped me with the skill set to stand out in job applications.
To my surprise, despite a thirteen-year gap in my corporate experience, I started receiving interview calls.
Although it took time, my patience and perseverance paid off. After six months of completing the program, I was selected for an internship program with Microsoft. They offered a full-time position as a product manager when I finished my internship.
I am forever grateful to DSCI and Microsoft for introducing a program like CyberShikshaa. It empowered me and gave me wings to start my second innings.
I want to end by saying that no matter how long your career break may be, never underestimate your potential to start again. Embrace opportunities, seek support from communities and unleash the power within you.
